Baylor Ryan was born Friday May 11, 2012 at 2:04pm after about 5 min of pushing! He was 7lbs 8oz and 20 1/4".
Last Wednesday (39w 1 day) I was just really uncomfortable all day, really bad lightening crotch, contractions ect. That evening I started losing my mucus plug and had some bloody show. We called my MIL at 11pm that night to give her a heads up about what was going on so she would be ready to come stay with Raegan. She ended up driving down right then because we weren't sure if I was going to make it through the night without needing to go to the hospital. I ended up falling asleep around 130am and slept until 5 until the contractions started again. Luckily, I had my 39 week appointment Thursday morning. I was very thankful that I decided to change my appointment earlier that week from Friday to Thursday because I wanted to see Dr. Gates and not a different doctor from the practice.
When we got to the office the contractions had slowed down but they were still pretty uncomfortable when they did come. I was 5cm and 80% and my bag of water was very low and bulging. Dr. Gates made a joke about if his nails were any longer he could have broke my water right then. He then said it was up to me whether I wanted to go straight over to the hospital or hold off until the contractions got closer together. We decided to wait and see what happened that afternoon. We took Raegan and MIL to lunch and got frozen yogurt. Contractions were about 4-6 min apart by this time. We got home and I took a short nap and laid around all afternoon which slowed the contractions back down to about 10 min apart. By 8pm my contractions were about 6 min apart so we started to get things ready for the hospital, I showered and watched Greys Anatomy and we left around 11pm. I didn't really want to go yet but since I was GBS+ I didn't want to wait too long and not have enough time for the abx to get in.
We got to the hospital around 1130 and had to go to triage first which I was really hoping I wouldn't have to since Dr. Gates told me whenever I decided to go to the hospital I would not be turned away. We weren't in triage long before getting transfered to my room. At this point I was 6cm and fully effaced. Bag of water still bulging. I was kind of surprised that I was only a 6 at that point since I was having contractions even though they weren't regular.
Contractions were still 6 min apart and Ryan and I were tired. I didn't really want to get the epidural yet but figured it might be the only way we get any sleep that night. I got the epi at 330am and it was a terrible experience. I started feeling really sick, nauseous and started shaking uncontrollably. My blood pressure dropped really low and I was vomiting and had the shakes for almost an hour. Once the blood pressure meds started working I felt better and we were able to get some sleep. Since I was laying down my contractions slowed down and I wasn't make much progress. I was stuck at 8cm for quite a while so they started pitocin sometime that morning. By 11am I was complete so they broke my water and sent Ryan to eat lunch. I could have started pushing but Dr. Gates was in surgery so we waited. At 1 he was still in surgery and he said to call another OB from the office over to deliver me because he would be another hour. But since I love Dr. Gates and wanted him to deliver, I didn't have the urge to push, and baby's heart rate was fine we waited for Gates to get there. With every contraction I guess you could see his head dropping.
He got to my room about 1:50 and was surprised I was still pregnant. He just knew that I would have had him by then. I gave him a couple practice pushes and he started getting dressed and everything ready. Baylor's heart rate did drop a little bit during the contractions but not low enough to really worry. I just knew I didn't want a c-section so I pushed as hard as I possibly could. A couple more pushes and Baylor arrived! Seriously, it was like 5 min of pushing and he was out. We had the tv on the entire time and during the breaks between contractions I was watching a Greys Anatomy rerun on Lifetime. At 2pm I wanted to change the channel to Ellen (it was her mother's day show) but we were a little busy with the delivery and no one would change it.
The first thing I said when they laid Baylor on my chest was "Wow! He looks identical to Raegan." I thought he seemed so little but someone said he was a pretty big baby. I was surprised by that. Even though a doctor told me he would be big, and I was feeling big he looked so little. He was 7lbs 8oz and 20 1/4". His lungs were definitely working too as he let out some pretty big cries and all I could think was oh great, we've got a "cryin Ryan" baby. But once he was wrapped up he stopped crying. The best part about all of this is Baylor was born on my mom's birthday!
(sidenote: when Ryan and I started talking in August about having another baby we said we would try one time for a May 11 baby. When we got pregnant right away and my due date was May 15 I knew the chance of a May 11 baby was like one in a million. So now that he is here and was born on his own on May 11 just blows my mind!)
I didn't tear at all and so Dr. Gates had nothing to repair. He was then called to another delivery and had to leave. Which was ok because he was done with everything and hanging out but unfortunately we didn't get a picture of him with Baylor.
We called family and had them come and I nursed B for the first time. Raegan was the first person to come in and meet him. She was so excited about her baby brother. After Raegan got to spend some time with him the rest of the family came in. I started feeling super nauseous and started vomiting again. Once I started feeling better we got moved to my post partum room.
I was given another dose of zofran and ate some mac n cheese and started to finally feel better. Everyone left around 730 including big sister. Ryan hung around for a little while, we ate dinner and then he left to get a good night sleep at home. Those hospital couches/beds are awful.
Ryan and Raegan came back the next day and spent most of the day at the hospital. Big sister Raegan did great. By dinner time she was tired but did not want to leave mommy and brother. She threw a major tantrum as they were leaving and it continued all the way home and about 20 min at home when Ryan finally called and asked what he was suppose to do. She wanted to be with mommy and brother at the hospital and not at home going to bed. I told him to give her a princess bath and feed her dinner and she will be fine. A few minutes later we facetimed and she was happy as could be in her princess bath. This was the longest Raegan and I have ever been apart and it was really hard on us, but we survived. Daddy did a great job with her and it will be hard on her next week when he goes back to work. She will be bored out of her mind with me and Baylor.
We got to come home on Sunday which was Mother's Day. That morning I got breakfast in bed at the hospital which was nice, pancakes, hashbrowns and bacon. Baylor and I hung out until Daddy got there. Once he was done with his 48 hour test we were allowed to leave. I was so excited to get home to my own bed and to Raegan. I wasn't worried at all about the transition to our family of 4 and so far it has been picture perfect. Way better than I ever expected it to be! Baylor is an amazing baby. He is so good, never cries, nursing well, and sleeping great at night! Raegan is doing great as a big sister. She is a great helper and loves him so much.
