3 weeks of Baylor

I was hoping to be better at blogging after Baylor arrived and record all of his milestones, unlike I did for his sister. Baylor doesn't even have a baby book. Raegan has two that I was good about writing in for about 2 months. Oops. Major mom fail.

Baylor is a great baby. Everyone told me I was so lucky with what an easy baby Raegan was that I would pay for it with number 2. So fair he is just as easy. Our only struggle is that he has been diagnosed with acid reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). After B was born and we were still in the hospital I noticed that he was choking and gagging a lot. Our second night in the hospital I called the nurse into our room to ask her about it. She said it was probably just mucus and amniotic fluid.  She mentioned that if I felt it was necessary they could stick a tube down into his stomach and suction it all out but there is a high risk of bacterial infection when it is done with newborns. I passed. At Baylor's one week check up I mentioned to Dr. Freeman that he was spitting up quite a bit. She said he was gaining weight just fine and as long as he wasn't uncomfortable, gagging or choking we will just keep an eye on it.  But if I notice any of that to call her back. As the days went by it was getting worse. It seemed like he spitting up everything he ate, arching his back and screaming in discomfort after he ate. And the worst was that at night he would gasp for air because he was choking and gagging. After about 2 nights of that I called the pediatrician back and she called him in Zantac. He seems to be doing a little better but it still very uncomfortable after he eats for about 20 minutes. Zantac for infants is awful. It is peppermint flavored and what I have read online it also has alcohol in it. The peppermint smell is so strong I feel so bad every time I give it to him. He screams, and chokes and gags it down. He has to have it twice a day. At his 1 month appointment next week I will ask about switching him to Prilosec.

Baylor's 1 week stats:

He was up to 7lbs 14oz (he was weighed on two different scales and the other one said 7lbs 11oz but they took the 14oz measurement)

He was 21' long and I forget what his little peanut head was. Dr. Freeman did not give us any percentiles.

Other than his acid reflux he is great. He is such a good sleeper and I feel so blessed with that. Since he barely lost any weight I never had to wake him at night to eat. So just like his big sister he was only waking once sometimes twice at night to eat. He has a nice long awake period from about 7-7:30 until I go to bed around 10. I make sure to feed him before I go to sleep and then he sleeps until about 3-4am, nurses and goes back to sleep until about 7am, nurses and goes back to sleep until 10am. He then has another 1-2 hour awake period. I make sure and nurse him every 2-3 hours duing the day so that he is getting all the calories he needs and can sleep for longer stretches at night. Raegan wakes up usually about 7:30-8am and goes to bed at 7:30-8pm. Except this morning she slept until 9:30am which was great! Ryan and I both slept until 9am!

Raegan is loving being a big sister. Surprisingly she isn't as obsessed with him as I thought she would be. I thought she would hold him and never want to put him down but she doesn't really ever ask to hold him. She loves to sing to him when he is crying and it makes him stop crying immediately. She usually sings the ABC's. She even says Baylor is her best friend! Heartmelt. Last night I asked her to hold him for me as she was laying in my bed watching cartoons before bed and he fell asleep in her arms and it was so sweet. Another heartmelt.

Life with two kids is pretty easy so far. He is a good baby, sleeps a lot, and is very chill. So I can put him down whenever, where ever and then tend to whatever Raegan needs. She is pretty good about being patient if I am nursing and she needs something. She has also let me take one or two short naps in the afternoon while she watches a cartoon or movie.

Nursing is going great. Once again I have a major oversupply. In the 20 days that I have been pumping I have over 415 ounces in the freezer already. I am pumping just so I can be comfortable. Last weekend we went and bought a small chest deep freeze so that we have somewhere to store all this milk and it can last up to a year in a deep freeze. When Baylor was one week old I did get mastitis for the first time ever. It was miserable but not as bad as people have said. I had a 102 fever for 2 days before I got antibiotics called in. Nursing was pretty painful on that side and it took about a week for the clogged duct feeling to go away. But thankfully it never effected my supply.

We had Baylor's newborn pictures taken last week by a new photographer in the area that did them for free so she could build up her portfolio. They turned out great.

Next weekend we are getting Baylor baptized. He will only be 4 weeks old but we need to get him baptized while he is still small enough to fit into the family heirloom Christening gown. It is probably 130+ years old. I think it was 107 years old when I wore it in 1984.

That's all I can think of for now. Hopefully it wont be 3 weeks again before I add another update on the little man and his big sister!
