3 hour glucose test

As soon as we got back from Disney, bright and early Monday morning I received a call from the OB office saying I failed my one hour glucose test by 2 freaking points. I had to have a 140 and I got a 142. I would have to go back for the 3 hour test later that week. I knew failing it was a possibility because most of the time when I eat ice cream or cupcakes I don't feel very good. I even have puked after eating frozen yogurt a time or two. I had talked to my doctor about it but he said it was probably more of a morning sickness thing than GD. I did not have any other signs or symptoms.

I went in Thursday morning for the dreaded test. I got there a little after 9am, had to have a fasting blood draw then drink the 100g sugar drink. It was awful. The 50g one hour test drink is not bad. This drink is thick and just awful tasting. You have 5 minutes to drink it in. I finished it in less than 2 minutes but seriously never want to do that again. I had to wait 1 hour and go back for my second blood draw. I thought I would enjoy this. Sitting in peace and quiet, no kids, just me time. Wrong. I was so bored and uncomfortable. HGTV was on and I am not a fan, I read all the magazines and still had time to kill. The office doesn't have wifi so my computer was no good. Thank goodness for iPhones and facebook! I went back for my 1 hour draw and my vein exploded. I felt sick. The phlebotomist said I could puke if I needed too. You only have to keep the drink down for 45 minutes but they can't tell you that until after the 1 hour draw. I survived and never puked. She just told me to drink lots of water. I chugged and chugged. I felt so much better then. Time slowly went by, thank goodness for texting. I had my 2 hour draw and then the 3 hour. I had to have 3 of the 4 draws on my right arm since the vein on my left arm exploded she said it would be very painful. I have great veins but bruise very easy. My poor arms. They were so sore for about 48 hours after. The Phlebotomist just said to heat and ice them. Which of course I didn't. I was so excited to leave there and eat. The test wasn't really as bad as I had in my head that it would be. But I never want to do it again.

I got my results back the next afternoon and passed. The nurse didn't go into any detail but I'm sure my dr will at my 30 week appt. I am just happy to have passed! No gestational diabetes diet and hello cupcakes!
