Last week Raegan had her first dentist appointment at Fishers Pediatric Dentistry. At Raegan's 2 year baby well checkup her pediatrician said once her two year old molars were done coming in to make an appointment to see the dentist. Her molars were all in by November, but between the pregnancy sickness and the holidays it didn't get done right away. I finally called at the beginning of February and got her in. We had plenty of time to get her prepared for the dentist. She loves the Bearenstein Bears, or Stain Bears as she calls them. OnDemand there was an episode of the "Stain Bears" where brother and sister bear visit the dentist. She loved it and it was great for her to see there is nothing to be scared of.
I totally expected it to be a fail and for her not to open her mouth and to just cry the entire time. We talked the days leading up to it about how the dentist will want to count her teeth. I would count hers and she would count mine. I somehow only have 9 teeth according to her. We started practicing her spitting when we would brush so we could move on from training toothpaste to big girl toothpaste with fluoride. She loves brushing her teeth, we do it 2-3 times a day but I was still nervous. She drinks juice and eats fruit snacks and I would feel like a total mom fail if my 2 year old had a cavity.
We got to the dentist at 9am. The office is decorated like a beach and a jungle. She loved it. We didn't have to wait long before she got called back. We went back and she got to pick out her own "boat" which is what the chairs looked like. She picked the purple one. She got to pick out her toothbrush and she picked out the purple and pink one, I thought for sure she would pick spongebob but nope! She then laid on the chair like a big girl and I was shocked. I sat at her feet. I should have known it wasn't going to last long and that I needed to get a picture asap! As soon as the hygienist sat down she got scared so she sat on my lap for the rest of the appointment. Dr. Ana came over and was great! She talked to Raegan about princess' and Disney, the animals at the beach and Raegan really warmed up to her. Dr. Ana said they needed to count. She asked Raegan to count how many eyes she has, ears, nose, fingers, mouth and tongue. Then she said they needed to count her teeth. Raegan opened up and said "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Dr. Ana was able to get a good look at all of her teeth and said they all looked great. The hygienist then took over for the cleaning. Once again, I thought this would be a fail. But she told Raegan she was going to put bubble gum sparkles on her teeth and Raegan was so excited. She let her use the polisher and polish her teeth. She did start crying a little bit, just because I think the sound scared her but she made it through. She got to rinse and spit like a big girl. She did so well she got an extra surprise, a ring and more stickers!
Ryan was working from home that day and she couldn't wait to get home and tell daddy that she had sparkles on her teeth. All in all, I would say it was a pretty successful trip and she goes back in 6 months for her next check up! Maybe then I will be able to get a picture of her in the chair!
